Parliament Summons Ken Agyapong Over Contempt Charges

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has been summoned by Parliament to answer charges of contempt against him.

The vociferous lawmaker is to appear before the Privileges Committee of Parliament, Tuesday July 3, 2018 in a public hearing expected to be a showdown, having allegedly insulted the Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu and some of his colleagues.

Mr. Agyapong is accused of making disparaging remarks against parliament and Mr. Mensah-Bonsu, describing the House as “useless” for having the MP for Suame as its leader.

He may be sanctioned based on the outcome of the probe by the Privileges Committee. A prima facie case was established against the maverick MP after opposition MP Muntaka Mubarak reported him to the House.

The Committee after examining the evidence said the MP breached Article 112 of the 1992 Constitution and Order 31(2) of Parliament’s Standing Orders as well as clause 4(9) of Code of Conduct of members of parliament.

“There Committee is expected to report its findings and recommendations to plenary after the hearing for the necessary actions and follow up,” a statement from Parliament said.
