GPL Review: Five things learned from matchday 12

Inter Allies sustained their 100 percent home record against Berekum Chelsea over the weekend. Coach Kenichi Yatshuashi’s team have the best home record in the league and are now chasing Aduana Stars’ record 15 home games without conceding a goal in 2009/2010. They have won all 6 home games, scoring 10 goals and conceding 0. Allies at home have become a bulwark never failing.

The Goalkeepers’ Show

Kotoko defeated Bechem United 1-0, but it was the two goalkeepers who stole the show. Felix Annan, who is currently miles better than every goalie in the league and needs no introduction, had a good run for his MVP award as 18-year-old Prince Asempa equally impressed.

Asempa came to the limelight when he started in goal and won the FA Cup two seasons ago at the age of 16 years – the youngest winner in the competition’s history with Bechem United. The youngster, who has ousted the experienced Ernest Adu as Bechem United’s first choice, has made 9 league appearances this season and proved that his spot in the team was no fluke.

Donsu – The Iron Feet

It’s been a while we last heard of Kwesi Donsu. He ended WAFA’s unbeaten home run some weeks ago with Medeama, but Donsu is primarily known for his iron feet. He’s every goalkeeper’s nightmare. The ambidextrous midfielder loves scoring long-rangers and setpieces and he was at it again this weekend when he drove one past Isaac Amoako and Dreams FC. He rolled back the years. Anyone remembers a few seasons ago when he scored 12 league goals with 7 or so being direct freekicks?

Adje Ade

Victorien Adje Adebayor at the moment is the hottest commodity on the local scene. The Nigerien became the first and only player to score a first-half goal in any league game this season for Inter Allies. He also registered Inter Allies first two goals away from home this season in midweek. He followed up with the winner this weekend against Berekum Chelsea, thus becoming the league’s joint top scorer with 7 goals, again he has scored 4 of Inter Allies last 5 goals in the league. If only other clubs had taken his performance at WAFU serious, Inter Allies wouldn’t have gotten his signature with little sweat.

Just Nine Goals?

Only 9 goals were scored in 7 league games in Week 12 – the least tally this season. The last time only 9 goals were scored on a match-day across all league centers was in Week 9 of last season and strangely, Aduana’s Bright Adjei missed a 90th minute penalty against Wa All Stars to take the tally to 10 – just as Wa All Stars’ Kingsley Effah also missed a penalty at the weekend against WAFA to take the tally to 10, in the 96thminute.

Interestingly, Wa All Stars goalkeeper was red-carded last season in that game and WAFA’s goalkeeper was also red-carded this season. Eerily similar eh? A free fall from the 21 goals scored in midweek. Though there’s still a game in hand involving Aduana Stars and Hearts of Oak, it remains to be seen how many goals would be produced.
