Golden Globes 2018: Oprah Winfrey leaves Hollywood stars in tears with powerful speech

THERE wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Oprah Winfrey delivered a powerful, almost presidential, speech at last night’s 75th Golden Globe Awards bravely tackling the sex-scandal gripping Hollywood.

The 63-year-old had to fight back the tears herself as she took to the stage when she was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

As she accepted the prestigious gong, the chat show host addressed sexual harassment and racial injustice and told girls watching the ceremony that a “new day is on the horizon”.

She began her speech by recalling the feelings she felt as a young girl watching Sidney Poitier win the best actor Academy Award win 1964.

The businesswoman said to the audience: ”It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first Black woman to be given the same award.

“It is an honour and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them. I want all the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon.

“When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”

Oprah also referenced the story of civil rights activist Rosa Parks and a woman called Recy Taylor who was kidnapped and raped aged 24 in 1944 by six men whilst she walked home from church in Alabama.

Talking about Recy, who died just ten days ago, the philanthropist said: “She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men.

“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”

The actress admitted she was inspired by all the women who have bravely shared their personal stories of abuse.

“This year, we became the story. but its not just a story affecting the entertainment industry, it’s one that transcends race, religion, gender, politics and workplace,” she added.

As she wrapped up her speech, the A-list audience gave the TV legend a standing ovation as many wiped away their tears.

Those watching were also completely overwhelmed by Oprah’s speech with many convinced the star would be running as President in 2020.

One asked on Twitter: “Is this @Oprah’s speech to open the 2020 presidential campaign? #GoldenGlobes.”

“If #Oprah runs for president I will feel obligated to vote for her after that speech #GoldenGlobes,” said another.

A third person commented: “Pretty sure #Oprah gave the most historic #goldenglobes speech ever.”
