“Leave And Save Yourself From Impeachment” – PNC To EC Bosses

“Leave And Save Yourself From Impeachment” – PNC To EC Bosses

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has charged the commissioners of the Electoral Commission (EC) to immediately abdicate their positions to avoid the embarrassment of being impeached.

According to the party, the embattled commissioners cannot be trusted to conduct credible elections in 2020 following their public spat.

“The conduct, posture and relationship amongst the EC commissioners and towards political parties prior to and after the 2016 elections could be likened to that of an Iraq – Iran war or better still the recent tension between America and North Korea,” it said in a statement.

“The public acrimony, fights, accusations and insults against each other by the EC commissioners just after the 2016 polls should be enough for an impeachment!. Indeed, if impeachment is too strong in our ears, then we kindly, humbly and respectfully ask the EC Chair and her deputies to step aside to avert an impeachment!” it added.

The EC boss Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services) on Monday appeared before the Chief Justice over allegations of mismanagement and incompetence at the commission.
The two deputies have accused their boss of financial mismanagement and poor leadership, an accusation she has rejected.

Both parties have been given three weeks by the Chief Justice to file their statement of response to the committee after which the hearing will continue.

Background

Some individuals believed to be staff of the Commission in July 2017 petitioned the President to remove Mrs. Osei over alleged abuse of office, causing financial loss to the state and breaches of Ghana’s procurement laws.

The petition was subsequently forwarded to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, as required by law, to establish a prima facie case based on which impeachment proceedings would commence against the EC chair.
