Akufo-Addo wants Savelugu ‘law breakers’ arrested

President Nana Akufo-Addo has asked the police to arrest New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives perpetrating acts of violence in the Savelugu/Nantong Municipality of the Northern Region.

Some executives of the NPP last week stormed the premises of the Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Assembly to prevent the newly approved Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, from entering her office.

Wielding machetes and clubs, the youth were said to have made their way to the office of the MCE when they were stopped by some two policemen who were guarding the entrance.

Joy News’ Northern Region Correspondent, Hashmin Mohammed reported that the police officers tried to stop the men but sensing danger, they called for reinforcement.

When the contingent of police and military personnel arrived on the scene, the youth reportedly pelted stones at them while they fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.

Ringleader of the demonstrators has justified the action against Hajia Seidu on grounds that she did not play any role in NPP’s 2016 electoral victory in the municipality.

However, speaking at the swearing-in of Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo on Monday, the President urged “the police to do all in their power to bring to book all who fall foul of the law.” He adds: “When you fall foul of the law, you must be dealt with accordingly, and the law enforcement agencies including the judiciary must ensure that this is done.”

Commenting on reports of lawlessness by NPP members that have happened in other parts of the country, the President said his government will not shield anyone found to have broken the laws of this country.

“Application of the laws of the land must occur, in the words of the judicial oath, ‘without fear or favour, affection or ill will’ and therefore, without recourse to the political, religious or ethnic affiliations of any citizen of the land,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.




The President has been criticised for widespread instances of violence by groups affiliated with the ruling party.

The most notable of these involved the Kumasi-based Delta Force, which infamously gained prominence after raiding the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and assaulting its Coordinator.

After arrests were made, Delta Force members again besieged the courtroom and released accused persons standing trial for the attack on the Coordinator.
