Abedi Pele defends sons against criticism, says they are good footballers

African football legend Abedi Pele has claimed that Ghanaians criticise his sons, Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew because they are skilled footballers.

According to Pele, his sons’ constant criticism is due to their talent and the fact that Ghanaians know they can perform better.

Pele stated that he faced similar criticism during his playing days and believes that his sons face the same treatment because they have what it takes to succeed.

“They have never got it wrong. What I can say is that they’ve never left me alone. When I was playing it was the same, so there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s because they know you have it and you can do it that’s why they come at you. If you don’t have it, nobody will call your name,” he told Sammy Yeboah as reported by Ghanaweb.

Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew have been subject to criticism regarding their involvement in the Black Stars, with some arguing that they have passed their prime and should be replaced by younger players. However, they continue to be trusted by Black Stars coach Chris Hughton, who considers them important to his plans for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast next year.

Abedi Pele is one of several football icons whose children have followed in their footsteps, and his sons, Andre and Jordan, have had successful careers and continue to thrive. During his playing days, Pele was considered one of the best players in the world, winning the Champions League with Marseille and being part of the last Ghana squad to win the AFCON in 1982. His sons hope to follow in their father’s footsteps and help Ghana end their four-decade wait for another AFCON title.

Andre is Ghana’s most capped player while Jordan has played more than 90 games for the Black Stars.
