‘Winneba Ramsar site not for mining!’ – Angry Winneba demonstrators fight gov’t over sale rumours

In Effutu in the Central Region, disgruntled residents have taken to the streets, adorned in red attire, to express their discontent over allegations of a potential sale of the Ramsar site in Winneba to investors for mining purposes.

The contested site, crucial for the annual Aboakyire festival’s deer hunting tradition, has prompted concerns that its sale may jeopardise the festival.

Months following the disclosure of substantial lithium deposits in Effutu and other Central Region areas to Parliament, residents are now opposing the possible sale.

They contend that the mining operations, if permitted, would compromise the reserve’s integrity, a site with longstanding cultural significance.

Protesters issued a warning, asserting their intent to halt the mining company’s operations, expressing fears that the exploration would disrupt the reserve that has existed for numerous years.

They marched with placards, some of which read: “Conservation over exploitation”, “Opana, why?”, “The Winneba Ramsar site is not for mining”, “No mining on sacred grounds”, “Protect our heritage”, among others.
