Abossey Okai spare parts dealers threaten demo over GRA exercise

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has given government a two-week ultimatum to stop the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from deploying its officers to shops in a tax-compliance and invigilation exercise.

The Authority, as part of efforts to increase tax revenues, has scheduled to deploy its officers to the spare parts enclave from Monday, October 2 to inspect receipts of customers.

The officers are to sit in shops from morning to ensure that the traders are complying with Section 41 of the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act particularly.

However, the Association sees this as “intimidation” and “disrespect”.

“Our members have always been law abiding citizens of Ghana living in peace and providing services to their fellow citizens so we don’t see the reason GRA has to invite their officers to come and sit in our shops from morning till we close just in the name of raising revenue for the government,” the Association said in a statement over the weekend.

“GRA office is now deploying various forms of intimidation, harassment and treat making in the name of raising tax.”

On Monday, shops in the spare parts hub were closed for two hours before leaders addressed journalists.

The action was to register the displeasure of traders against the initiative.

They said they will have no option than to hit the streets if their concerns are not addressed by government.
