The level of African football has improved – Chris Hughton

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton has lauded the improvement in the standard of football on the African continent.

He said this in an interview with talkSPORT radio as he touched on the Black Stars’ 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana is on the verge of progressing to next year’s tournament that is to be hosted in the Ivory Coast.

The Black Stars lead Group E and need either draw or a win in their final qualification game against Central African Republic to book a spot in the tournament.

While talking up the Black Stars’ qualification chances and title expectations, Hughton identified the difficulty in achieving both because of how good teams have become on the African continent.

“One thing I have seen during the travels on the games we’ve played is that the level of the African countries now in football has improved absolutely no doubt. I think it’s because of the infrastructure; [there is] so much more now. The African players play at a good level with good clubs…and [there’s] no doubt that the level of the AFCON will continue to improve.”

The Ghana job is Chris Hughton’s first role since he ventured into national team management after spending an extensive time coaching clubs like Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.
