Minister supports Medeama SC for winning GPL

The Western Regional Minister, Dr Kobby Okyere Darko-Mensah, has shown support for Medeama Sporting Club by presenting a cash amount of GH¢47,000.00 to the team.

This gesture comes as a recognition of Medeama SC’s ending the 47-year Ghana Premier League (GPL) title drought in the Western Region.

Medeama SC recently secured their third GPL trophy. The last time a western regional team carried the GPL trophy was Sekondi Hasaacas’ dominance in 1977.

The thrilling final day match at Akoon Park saw Tarkwa-based Medeama SC clinch the championship, needing only a win or a draw to secure the title.

They had maintained a three-point lead over their closest rivals, Aduana FC and Bechem United, on Matchday 33 of the competition.

In reviewing the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League season, several standout statistics were highlighted:

The league recorded a total of 644 goals in 306 games, showing an improvement from the previous season’s tally of 627 goals.

Abednego Tetteh emerged as the top scorer in the league with 18 goals, while Diawisie Taylor finished as the top scorer in the 2020/21 season with the same number of goals.

The matchdays with the highest number of goals were Week 15 and Week 33, with 26 goals scored, while Week 1 recorded the lowest with 11 goals.

Bassit Seidu of Accra Lions and Yaw Annor of Asante Kotoko scored four goals each in a single game on Matchday 27, replicating a historical feat.

Cephas Kofi Mantey of Bechem United scored the first hat trick of the season in Week 8 against Noatreman FC, completing it in just 15 minutes.

Hafiz Wontah Konkoni of Bechem United became the second player to score a hat trick in the league, achieving the feat against Real Tamale United in Week 15.

Issah Kuka of Real Tamale United joined the list of hat-trick scorers, netting three goals against Gold Stars in Week 26.

Real Tamale United’s David Abagna Sandan became the first player to miss a penalty in the season, failing to convert on Week 1.

Michel Otou of Legon Cities received the first red card of the season in the match against Medeama SC on Matchday One.

Hearts of Oak emerged as the only team to defeat newly promoted side Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Kronmansah Park in Week 9.

Medeama SC was awarded the most penalties in the league (9), with their center back, Vincent Atinga Addae, scoring 9 penalty goals, the highest by a center back since the 2020/21 season.

Great Olympics and Berekum Chelsea were awarded the least number of penalties; one each.

Aduana FC held the top position in the league log for 185 days before being overtaken by Medeama SC, who eventually became champions.

Abednego Tetteh finished as the top scorer of the season with 18 goals, contributing 11 goals for King Faisal in the first round and 16 goals for Bibiani Gold Stars after joining them in the second transfer window.

Felix Kyei of Medeama SC and Joseph Addo of Aduana FC both recorded 15 clean sheets as the season’s top shot-stoppers.

The league witnessed a total of 16 own goals, with 9 scored in the first half.
