82 Ghanaians evacuated from Khartoum, Sudan so far

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration says 82 Ghanaian nationals have been evacuated from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, so far.

Seventy-seven were evacuated to safety in Gedaref, Sudan, to be transported to Ethiopia on Wednesday, April 26 while five, comprising three footballers and two working for an Australian mining company, are being evacuated through the Egyptian border post of Wadi Halfa, which is north of Sudan.

A press release on Tuesday, April 25 said efforts are still ongoing to evacuate any other stranded Ghanaian(s) in Sudan.

The North African country has been hit by civil war for the past one week with the capital engulfed in smoke.

The country’s military have been engaged in a fight with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

About 400 have been reported killed while over 3,500 are said to be wounded.

Many including Sudanese citizens are fleeing the capital for border towns and neighbouring countries.

“The Ministry takes this opportunity to inform the general public, particularly, Ghanaians stranded in Sudan to take note of the contact details of its Honorary Consul who is on standby to assist them to be evacuated to safety.”
