2022 World Cup: Adam Kwarasey backs Ghana to excel in Qatar

Former Ghana goalkeeper Adam Larsen Kwarasey believes the Black Stars will excel at the 2022 World Cup later this year.

Former Norway U-21 player, who was Ghana’s goalkeeper at the 2014 World Cup Brazil, said the Black Stars are hungry for success and will demonstrate it in Qatar.

The tournament is set to begin in November, with the Black Stars facing off against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay in the group stage.

“I really hope that they go further than any other African team has done in Qatar because I feel like we are a football nation and the country deserves it. We are hungry for success and you could tell football is big,” Kwarasey told Joy Sports.

Kwarasey also discussed Ghana’s disappointing performance in Brazil eight years ago, blaming the Black Stars’ group stage exit on a lack of unity among players.

He started the first game against the United States, which Ghana lost 2-1. Due to the defeat, then-coach Kwesi Appiah was forced to make changes, and Kwarasey was dropped from the starting eleven for games against Germany and Portugal.

“The World Cup was disappointing, we can all say that. I won’t sit here and cry about how things went. I’m over it, I’m past it but that’s the tournament where I felt that ‘we are not together at all’ – as players and technical team. It wasn’t the best experience but it is what it is, and like I said, I am past it,” he said.

Kwarasey has not been called up to the Black Stars since the 2014 tournament. The 34-year-old is currently unemployed.
