Ecowas lifts Mali sanctions

The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States has lifted the sanctions imposed on Mali following the coup d’etats in August 2020 and May 20210.

The decision was taken at the 61st Ordinary Session held in Accra, Ghana on Sunday, July 3.

The Authority accepted a proposal by the Malian military to hold elections and return to civilian rule by March 2024.

It also accepted a two-year timetable for the restoration of democracy in Burkina Faso.

In the case of Guinea, the junta has been warned to speed up their proposed three-year transition back to democracy.
