Deepen your local content contribution in Ghana – Egyapa Mercer to Maersk Drilling

The Ghanaian delegation at the 2021 Africa Oil Week in Dubai, UAE has met with Maersk Drilling, a drilling company with presence in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.

At the meeting, leader of the delegation and Deputy Minister for Energy, Andrew Egyapa Mercer tasked the company to among other things increase their contribution to Ghana’s local content and local participation drive as anchored on L.I. 2204.

This, according to the Sekondi lawmaker can be done through a conscious effort of skills and technology transfer to their Joint Venture Ghanaian partners as required by law.

“For the current Energy Minister, Dr. Prempeh and some of us, local content and local participation is an article of faith and, therefore, as a company, we want you to intentionally pass on skills and technology to the indigenous Ghanaian companies as Ghana strives to build capacity and know how in the upstream petroleum space” he said.

Taking the delegation through a virtual reality (VR) tour of their offshore facility, above and beneath the sea, going as deep as over 3000ft, Head of Drilling Solutions at the company, Ben Pomford revealed that they intend to bring some of the VR sets to Ghana for the country to have first-hand experience of underwater physics.

For his part, CEO of the Petroleum Commission, Egbert Faibille Jnr., said the Commission’s doors are always open to discussions with the company towards the training of many more Ghanaians as part of efforts to localise most expatriate roles in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.

This, he said, is in furtherance of President Akufo-Addo’s Accelerated Oil and Gas Capacity Programme (AOGC) vision.

Other discussions with the company centered on the progress and status of operations of Maersk Drilling in Ghana and opportunities available in the upstream sector for Maersk to guarantee their longevity in the country.
