Hearts of Oak lose to Accra Lions in friendly ahead of CAF Champions League

Champions Hearts of Oak lost to newly-promoted Ghana Premier League side Accra Lions in a friendly ahead of their CAF Champions League campaign.

The Phobians were beaten 3-2 in the exciting match played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, a week before they play Guinean side CI Kamsar.





Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, who was named in Ghana’s squad for recent World Cup qualifiers, gave Hearts the lead. The lead though did not last for a long time Oliver Amedor equalised for Lions.

Isaac Mensah ensured that Hearts ended the first half ahead with a great finish, but Samuel Boadu’s men struggled in the second half and Lions took full advantage by scoring two goals to secure victory.

The friendly match wouldn’t have taken place if the first leg fixture of Hearts of Oak’s preliminary round tie with Kamsar was not cancelled.

Kamsar were due to host the first leg fixture today, but political unrest in Guinea forced the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to make change the two-legged clash to a one-off decider at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 19.

Hearts have high hopes of excelling on their return to Africa after six years of absence.
