Arrangements made to avert stampede at job fair – YEA CEO

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) says it put in place proper arrangements ahead of the career fair, which suffered a near-stampede at the Accra International Conference Centre on Thursday.

There was a massive turn-out on the first day of the fair, which provided, among others, on-the-spot job interview to get unemployed youth to employers.

But those who trooped to the fair on Thursday were seen struggling to enter the venue, nearly resulting in a stampede.

Reacting to the issue on Onua TV/FM’s Maakye on Friday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Agency, Justin Koduah Frimpong, told host Captain Smart the youth thought they would have been the first to get employed if they struggled to enter first.

He said “the programme was to have started at 9 but they were there as early as 5:00am”.

“We registered about 120 companies but 78 companies showed up and today, when you get to the venue, you will see totally different arrangements.”

Mr. Kodua Frimpong said “we estimated between 2,000 to 3,000 job seekers and we will be able to use the weekend to determine which of them were employed on-the-spot and which of them were asked to present their CVs and call later”.
