Yaw Preko not in support of sacking CK Akonnor

Former Ghana international Yaw Preko has said calls for the sacking of Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor have come “too early” and he doesn’t support it.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been urged by many Ghanaians to dismiss Akonnor after the Black Stars lost to South Africa on Monday to leave them second in Group G in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

It was Akonnor’s 10 match in charge of the national team since his appointment 20 months ago and he has recorded four wins, lost four and drawn two.

“The [calls for his] sacking is too early, it’s just two games,” coach Preko who was dismissed by Medeama recently told Joy FM.

“He has already qualified us to the Afcon and we just played two matches so why do we have to push the panic button? No, we have to take it easy.

He added, “I know how everybody is feeling. If you sack him now and bring another coach and we don’t qualify, he will tell you his time was very short and that you need to give him time. If he doesn’t qualify, are you going to sack him too? Then we’ll end up just always sacking.”

“Let’s give him the support and benefit of the doubt. We know he can do it, we have to believe in him. Sometimes when the bashing is too much, the person gets confused.”

Akonnor must redeem himself when the Black Stars face Zimbabwe in a doubleheader next month.
