Coronavirus: Big jump in coronavirus cases in South Africa

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has jumped to 402 – the highest in sub-Saharan Africa.

This means there’s been an increase of 128 since the last announcement on Sunday night.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Monday night about ways to prevent coronavirus from spreading any further.

He is also expected to reveal a stimulus package for small businesses and how he thinks the country’s fragile economy can survive.

The BBC understands the military is preparing to be deployed in areas where communities are not adhering to restrictions aimed at curbing the virus.

This include gatherings of more than 100 people in places such as churches, and bars which continue to sell alcohol despite being ordered to close.

Meanwhile, the first patient diagnosed with the virus in Eastern Cape province has reportedly broken self-quarantine rules.

She complained about her rights being infringed when she was told to stay indoors and left her house.

Authorities are now tracing people she may have been in contact with.
