Former MP shares ‘Sex for Grade’ experience

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh-Chai, has recounted how some young ladies he has mentored have been victims of ‘Sex for Grades.’

The ladies, whom he claimed were coerced by lecturers in some notable tertiary institutions in the country, almost failed the papers for not giving in to their sexual advances.

Mr Tetteh-Chai’s comment follows a documentary by BBC Africa Eye which implicated some lecturers from the University of Ghana (UG) and the University of Lagos (Unilag).

Appalled by the development, Mr Tetteh-Chai blamed the lack of supervision in tertiary institutions for the canker.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, he said some lecturers take advantage of weak systems to prey on the young ladies.

The former Ablekuma Central MP disclosed how one of his mentees was failed several times by a lecturer for refusing to give in to his sexual advances.

Another, Mr Tetteh-Chai noted escaped being infected with HIV by a male lecturer in a whisker.

“This lady was very fortunate because the lecturer asked her to take his bag into his office to trap her but miraculously the bag fell and she saw antiretroviral drugs in it,” he added.

The BBC documentary, he maintained is “just a tip of the iceberg because sex for grade in our universities is a daily affair.”
