Old Vandals Tema Branch donates and spends quality time at Orphanage home

Old Vandals Association (OVA) Tema branch as part of their yearly Easter obligation joined Heart of the Father Outreach Orphanage Home at Prampram near Tema on Saturday 19th April 2019 to spend quality time with them.

Members of OVA Tema as part of the event donated food and household items valued in excess of GHS4,500 in addition to a significant number of used clothing.

OVA Tema announced the establishment of a scholarship scheme to support the university education of a child from the home beginning of 2019/2020 academic year. This was in response to an appeal made by the Orphanage home to the association during a similar charity event in 2018.

Speaking to the President of the OVA Tema Branch, Mr. Fred Doodo explained the support and value of Tertiary education as the Branch took up an initiative to sponsor the tertiary education of the children which commences next academic year.

“the value of tertiary education is enormous and for us to receive an appeal from the orphanage home to support them financially,
It was a call to move to their aid” he said.

“We have started this initiative to support the tertiary education of the children, starting from next academic year, we will be sponsoring one of the kids to the University..” Mr. Doodo mentioned.

The managers of the home expressed great joy at the good news and wished the association well, as they welcomed the initiative by OVA Tema.

Meanwhile the growing number of children on the streets in Ghana especially in Accra between the ages of 5 to 15 years are alarming and a cancer to the social fabric as well as a treat to the nations security. There is the need to salvage the situation, enroll many in schools and vocational training for these children to become asset for the nation.

Mr. Fred Doodo sharing his thoughts on the issue mentioned that, the social support system are dwindling down especially the extended family support system which used to be another means to care for the less privileged in the family thereby saving the innocent children from the street, however, the burden has shifted significantly on government which cannot tackle the issue alone.

“I will say briefly, there is a break down on the social support system, where the extended family takes responsibilities by taking care of the kids who perhaps have lost both parents or do not have any support from their nuclear family …. now the highest burden is on government to fight the cancer which I believe cannot do that alone. Key stakeholders must step in and take actions to support these children which in our small ways we have been doing as an Association” he explained.

Old Vandals Association (OVA) Tema Branch meets every month.
