Revealed: How GRIDCO’s Transmission Tower was hacked by saboteurs

It has emerged that, some saboteurs used corrosive substances to hack down one of the pylons of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

Head of Communication and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Energy, Nana Kofi Oppong Damoah revealed this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Tuesday.

The hacked pylon, near the head office of GRIDCo, which transmits power from Karpower and AKSA to the national grid, he noted, was installed seven months ago.

Mr Damoah said the bolts and nuts holding one of the pylons together had been removed after what appears to be consistent bathing of portions of it with a corrosive substance.

Nana Kofi Oppong Damoah said bolts and nuts holding one of the pylons together had been removed by the saboteurs.

“Workers of GRIDCo reported to the site on Monday only to discover that the pylon had been hacked down, this is very strange,” he stressed.

The head of communication said it was obvious saboteurs were bent on tarnishing the image of the Akufo-Addo administration, especially at a time when the country is faced with power outages.

“When we went to the site, we detected the same corrosive chemicals on the other towers along the line which are very dangerous for our power sector,” he bemoaned.

This notwithstanding, Mr Damoah said they have put in place security measures to avoid a recurrence of such an unfortunate incident.

He was also confident the perpetrators will be found and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
