Three convicted of forcing students to eat raw chicken

The police had charged the three convicts — Abukari Anaba, Prince Antwi and Peter Owusu Oduom — with conspiracy to commit crime and assault.
They all pleaded guilty to the two counts and were convicted on their own pleas.

Each of them was fined GH¢3,000 to be paid to the state. In addition, they were asked to pay GH¢3,000 in compensation to the student victims.

The convicts will go to prison for 12 months each if they fail to pay the fines.

Bench warrant

The court also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of one suspect in the case, Kwaku Antwi, who is at large.
Another suspect, Osei Francis, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000, with two sureties.

Facts

The facts of the case, as presented to the court by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Edmund Nyamekye, were that on January 21, 2019, the three SHS students, all juveniles from Akomadan, were apprehended by the convicts for allegedly stealing a fowl which they (victims) were preparing to cook.

“The convicts compelled the juveniles to eat the raw chicken and made a video of it which went viral on social media,” he said.

Mr Nyamekye said when the police got wind of the act, they started investigations into the matter, leading to the arrest of four of the suspects who were duly charged with the offences.
