Lift ban on small scale mining – Miners to gov’t

The Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners is demanding the ban on legal and illegal small scale mining to be lifted after the six months suspension elapsed.
They also said that if the ban remains in force, government must announce new ways by which they can carry out their operations.
Early this year, government announced a ban on their operations as part of a general crackdown on illegal mining. According to the miners, government has no excuse to extend the period again after they had complied with the ban directive.

An Executive of the Association, Mike Gizo, stated they have cooperated well enough and the same should be reciprocated.
“We have cooperated long enough and we expect the reciprocal,” Mr. Gizo opined.
He added: “We have given them the chance to put all their policies in place and what we expect is that they should just come out and roll out the policies so that we can go back to work immediately.
“They told us to give them six months to prepare the grounds for better methodologies and modalities of operations, so what we are expecting from them is that we have finished with all the modalities and all operations so small scale miners go back to site. That’s what we are expecting from them”.
