BOST admits buying 18 iPhones for staff at ¢285k

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Limited Company (BOST) has responded to reports that it purchased 18 iPhone 13 Pro Max phones for some staff at a total cost of over GH¢28 million.

In a statement addressing these reports, BOST confirmed that it did indeed buy the phones for its corporate executives in May of the previous year.

The statement clarified that the total cost of the phones was Two Hundred and Thirty-Four Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS234,000.00), which, when grossed up for taxes, amounted to Two Hundred and Eighty-Five Thousand, Four Hundred and Twelve Ghana Cedis, Sixteen Pesewas (GHS285,412.16).

BOST emphasised that this expenditure had been duly captured in the financial report of the company and audited by the Auditor General.

No adverse findings were made regarding this decision during the audit.

The company acknowledged that there was an error in the placement of the decimal point in the reported amount.

The figure of Twenty-Eight Million, Five Hundred and Forty-One Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixty-One Ghana Cedis (GHS28,541,261.00) was due to a typographical error that misplaced the decimal point, converting GHS285,412.61 into GHS28,541,261.00.

BOST urged the public to disregard the claim that the company purchased 18 phones for 28 million, emphasising that it is both erroneous and mischievous.

The company justified the purchase of the phones, stating that they were acquired to equip the team with efficient communication tools for staying in touch with the management information and business intelligence systems of the company.

“In the petroleum storage and transportation sector, where timing is critical, quick access to information can make a significant difference in decision-making,” the statement averred.

BOST maintained that the systems put in place, including the provision of phones to key team members, have contributed to the efficiency of their operations and informed decision-making.
