ECG begins reinstallation of prepaid meters in Krobo

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reached an agreement with all stakeholders in Kroboland to install prepaid meters once again in homes.

The exercise starts on Tuesday, June 14.

According to an announcement by the Company, the prepaid meters are free of charge, therefore cautioning customers to beware of impostors who might want to defraud them.

But with the benefit of hindsight, particularly the deadly disturbances sparked by the massive disconnection of power due to heavy indebtedness, the Company has agreed to ring-fence the debt of 2014 to 2017.

“The debt of 2018 to 2021 is to be paid over a five-year period,” ECG added in its announcement.

Customers are expected to, however, pay all 2022 bills going forward.

It assured that the new meters will have no debts on them.

Those who need additional meters have been requested to apply for them at the ECG office, which came under vandalism during the 2018 disturbances.

“ECG wishes to appeal to customers and the general public to collaborate for smooth implementation of the prepaid meter project.”

Background
There has been no love lost between ECG and Krobos as agitations and protests have led to attacks on offices of the former while a young man, Thomas Partey, lost his life.

This even forced the Company to shut its offices in 2021 and relocate to Juapong in the Volta Region.

“Our doors will always be opened, and when reason prevails, and the Management of Tema region are convinced that the environment that we have left is safe and harmonious for us to directly operate in these communities, we will not hesitate to give them our approval,” the Company said while packing out of Somanya.
