Man Utd chief Ed Woodward’s stance on sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Burnley defeat

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward has made a decision on sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the Red Devils lost to Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night, with growing pressure on the under-fire manager.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to remain in charge of the club. According to Sky Sports, the United manager has retained the board’s support despite the Red Devils losing 2-0 at home to Burnley on Wednesday night.

United have made their worst league start to a campaign since the 1988-1989 season.

Solskjaer has now lost 12 Premier League matches as the Red Devils’ permanent boss – more than he’s won.

The Norwegian could have seen the club move to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea with a win over Burnley on Wednesday night.

But, the 2-0 defeat was a major dent in their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Solskjaer has come increasingly under pressure from fans after failing to improve the team’s league position.

The manager spent almost £150million last summer, in a bid to get back into Europe’s elite competition.

But, disappointing league defeats have left the club clambering for a top-four finish.

United have lost this season to Watford, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Arsenal.

They also suffered a disappointing 1-0 away defeat to Kazakhstani side Astana in the Europa League in November.

Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Burnley was a particularly disappointing result, with the Old Trafford crowd booing the team’s performance at the full-time whistle.

The stadium was more than half empty by the time the match was finished.

United were without Marcus Rashford for the clash, after he picked up a back injury in an FA Cup replay against Wolves last week.

But, Solskjaer decided to keep youngster Mason Greenwood on the bench, and play without a recognised striker.

Chris Wood opened the scoring for Burnley in the first half, before Jay Rodriguez confirmed the win.

Rodriguez managed to beat David de Gea at his near post from 20 yards, which condemned United to their third defeat in four matches.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to either Watford or Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup, before heading to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

United go into the Carabao Cup semi-final having lost 3-1 in the first leg at Old Trafford.

The result flattered United, who were soundly beaten by Pep Guardiola’s side.

Solskjaer will host Wolves in United’s next Premier League fixture, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side managing to take six points from City earlier this season.

Following that tie, Solskjaer’s side will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the league.
