U-23 AFCON: Egypt secure 2020 Olympics spot

Egypt’s U23 national team have beaten South Africa in the U23 AFCON semi-finals to secure a spot in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

The Pharaohs secured their spot in the last four after finishing top of their group with nine points in three games.

Meanwhile, South Africa were second in Group B as they drew two games and won 1-0 against eventual finalists Ivory Coast.

Following a first-half that ended in a goalless draw, Ramadan Sobhi put the hosts in the lead from the penalty spot in the 59th minute.

Ismaily winger, Abdelrahman Magdy, doubled Egypt’s score in 84th minute. Five minutes later, the 22-year-old completed his brace after an unfortunate mistake from the Amaglug-glug goalkeeper.

Egypt have now booked their spot in the 2020 Olympics for the first time since 2012. They still have one game against Ivory Coast in the final on Friday November 22. While South Africa will face Ghana in third place decider and a chance to join the finalists in Tokyo next summer.
