What Man Utd think will happen with David De Gea speaks volumes about where club are at

MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly expect David De Gea to sign a new contract this season – in the biggest clue yet that insiders at Old Trafford are confident the club are on the right track under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United star David De Gea’s contract expires in 2020 after the club took up a clause that allowed them to trigger a one-year extension last month.

The Spain international is one of the last few disciples of the Sir Alex Ferguson era and, as Sunday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham showed, remains vital to the cause.

The Manchester United star was the man of the match against Tottenham at Wembley, making 11 saves to ensure Solskjaer continue his winning start to life at Old Trafford.
Given his importance, many United fans are hopeful the 27-year-old will sign a new deal at the club.
And ESPN claim United are confident of keeping their man.

What a difference, therefore, a month can make.

Prior to sacking Jose Mourinho, United were worried. With PSG and Juventus sniffing about De Gea, alarm bells began to go off.

There was a sense that the goalkeeper could leave, particularly given how far off United were from meeting his ambitions.

But, now, things are different.
ESPN say that, despite De Gea demanding pay parity with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba, United feel he will stay put. They are even said to be confident he will pen an extension before the season’s end.

And that is the greatest indicator of Solskjaer’s remarkable impact.

The 45-year-old was brought in to restore some happiness after the dark days of Mourinho.

And six wins in a row have done just that, with Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Reading and now Tottenham all slipping to defeat.

Meanwhile, United star Jesse Lingard is hopeful De Gea will stay put.
“We want him to stay,” Lingard said.

“Having a keeper like that gives you extra confidence.

“They looked like scoring but he saved us. Some of his saves, you’re like: ‘Oh my god.’

“He’s one of the best keepers in the world, if not the best.”

De Gea has been at United since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The shot-stopper has helped the Red Devils win the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League in the time since.
