Man Utd news: Mike Phelan is the reason for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winning start - insider

MANCHESTER UNITED have made the right call to name Mike Phelan as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No 2, according to a club insider.
Manchester United parted ways with Jose Mourinho earlier this month, with Ed Woodward opting to pull the plug on the 55-year-old’s Old Trafford career.

In the immediate aftermath of that action, it was announced that Solskjaer would be returning to the club.

The Manchester United legend was joined by Phelan, who has also returned to the club five years after David Moyes opted against keeping him on
And Ben Thornley, who is an analyst for MUTV, believes that decision has proven to be a masterstroke.
United already look a far slicker outfit than they did previously.

Solskjaer has won his first two games in the job, scoring eight goals in the process, against Cardiff and Huddersfield.

And Thornley feels bringing Phelan in was a masterstroke.

“I feel as though Mike Phelan is a guy that was at the club a long time before his departure and he worked as a coach under Sir Alex Ferguson,” he told Tribal Football.

“Solskjaer will benefit from having Mike Phelan back at the club to assist,” he said shortly after his appointment.

“He’s a likeable guy and a very good coach and you suspect Sir Alex Ferguson might have been asked for his advice.

“He didn’t want David Moyes to let Phelan go in the first place in 2013.

“I do expect a bounce from United over the next few weeks.”
