Emulate Kofi Annan's humility, uniting principles - NCCE boss to politicians

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) boss has asked politicians to emulate the humility and uniting principles of late United Nations boss, Kofi Annan as they govern the country.

Josephine Nkrumah said the late UN Secretary-General has left many useful political lessons that all those who are leading and those who desire that need to learn.

Mr Annan died on August 18, 2018, in Switzerland at the age of 80 after a brief illness. His funeral will take place on September 13 in Accra, his family has said.

His death has spawned an outflow of tributes from world leaders, including British Premier Theresa May and his successors at the UN.
Speaking after signing the Book of Condolence opened in his honour at the Accra International Conference Centre Friday, Ms Nkrumah described Mr Annan as a man who served the world with distinction.

“When you talk about Kofi Annan you cannot speak without acknowledging his role in peace efforts across the world [and] he can be remembered for his humility,” she said.

She charged the political class to desist from speeches and acts that can divide the country along party and ethnic lines.

“The polarisation of the Ghanaian populace should be something of the past. We should work toward uniting the people,” she advocated.
According to her, Mr Annan led the way in the area of unity and peace and has called on the politicians to do same.

“As an advocate for world peace, Kofi Annan epitomised someone who believed in the peaceful coexistence of all. He showed the way when it came to compromising and collaboration when it came to the bigger picture,” she added.
