Top 10 African football clubs

Top 10 African football clubs

African football players are as popular in international football clubs as never before. And there is a reason for that: they definitely belong to the best players worldwide.

You just have to look at names, such as Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba, Mohammed Salah or Jay Jay Okcha, who were or still are very successful players in the big clubs worldwide.

All of them started out in clubs of their home countries. But little is known in the Western World about African clubs. Therefore, it’s finally the time to look at the best Football Clubs, the African continent has to offer.

Tout Puissant Mazembe

The currently highest ranked football club in continental Africa is Tout Puissant Mazembe. At home at the Congolese capital Lubumbashi, the current market value lays at 14.0 m.

In average, around 18.000 spectators watch their matches in the home stadium Stade TP Mazembe. Many people will know Tout Puissant Mazembe under their old name, “Englebert”.

Al-Merrikh Sudan .

On the 2nd place follows the probably oldest, still active, football club of Africa, Al-Merrikh Sudan. The name gives it already away – it’s a Sudanese football club which calls the city of Omdurman its home.

Al-Merrikh was the first football club, which won the Sudanese Premier League in 1934 and won it 18-times since then. Al-Merrikh plays most of their matches in their stadium, called after its team name “Al-Merrikh Stadium”. Most of their fans however refer to the stadium as “Red Castle”.

Esperance de Tunis – Tunisia

Let’s have a look at a Northern African team – the Tunisian Esperance de Tunis. It deserves its 3rd place on the list with their current market value of 12.75 m €. The team calls, as the name of the team already says, the capital of Tunis its home. Spectators pilgrimate on a weekly base to the stadium “Stade Olympique d’El Menzah” to watch their favorite team.

The club also belongs to the oldest ones in Africa – it was founded in the year of 1919. Since then, Esperance has won the Tunisian League 26-times, the Tunisian Cup 14-times and the Tunisian Super Cup 2-times.

Therefore, it’s one of the most successful teams on a domestic level. But they also shined in the foreign: the CAF Champions League, the Arab Super Cup and the Arab Club Championship are all competitions they have won in the past.

Raja Casablanca – Morocco

Another Northern African country has one of the most famous teams in the world – Morocco can call Raja Casablanca its own. It is one of the younger football clubs in Africa, it was founded in 1949.

An interesting fact is, that the name “Raja” means “hopefulness” in Arabic. Well – they were hopeful and successful – Raja was the first African team which took part in the FIFA World Club Championship. But they are also very successful on a domestic level.

In total, they have won the Moroccan championship 10-times. Also, their current market value lays at 8.13 m €, which makes them to one of the most valuable teams in Africa. If Morocco succeed in obtaining the organisation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Wearebettors said that the final might take place in their stadium.

Al Hilal Omdurman – Sudan

The next Sudanese football club, Al Hilal Omdurman, was founded back in 1930. It is located, as you can guess, in the city of Omdurman. They’ve won the Sudanese league 7-times in just 9 seasons. In total, they won the championship 27-times.

El Zamalek – Egypt

Another team on this list in Northern Africa is the Egyptian football club El Zamalek. The club is located in the city of Giza. They can be proud of several domestic and international trophies: the Egyptian Cup, Egyptian League, CAF Championship League, CAF Super Cup and the African Cup. They have a good team this year and might win the African Champions League. Feel free to bet with the Genting promocode if you want to try your luck!

AS Vita Club – Congo DRC

Let’s head over to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their most successful football club AS Vita Club was already founded in the year 1935 and won the “African Cup of Champions Clubs” back in 1973.

But that’s of course not all: on a domestic level, they have won the “Coupe du Congo” 9-times and the “Linafoot” 12-times. Also, they’ve won the “Papa Kalala Challenge” 2-times. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?

Kaizer Chiefs – South Africa

The Egyptian football club Al Ahly (which means “The National) is currently the African club with the highest market value (19.25 m €). Al Ahly was founded back in 1907 and has become one of the most successful football clubs in Africa. It earned the title “Africa Club of the Century” by the CAF back in 2000.

Also, Al Ahly has won 107 domestic and 19 international titles so far. Exactly these 19 international trophies have made Al Ahly officially the most successful football club – not just in Africa but worldwide. It is even better than the Argentinian Boca Juniors or Italian AC Milan. According to Betfirst, a Belgian bookmaker, Al Ahly is the favorite of the African Champion’s League this year.

Dynamos Zimbabwe

The football club Dynamos is, as the name states it already, based in Zimbabwe and emerged from the joint-venture of the football teams Rhodesia and Harare Township back in 1963. Their biggest achievements so far are the winning of the Cup of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League. So far, they are the most successful team in their home country but have the goal of coming to international success very soon.
