Man Utd news: Inside Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward relationship amid current problems

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho talks with Ed Woodward every day amid reports the club are currently experiencing some problems.
Manchester United appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor back in 2016 with the club stuck in a rut at the time.

However, Mourinho made an instant impression last year by landing the EFL Cup and Europa League trophies.

There is a feeling that a new era of success is just around the corner despite Manchester City being primed to win the Premier League title this season.

Manchester United sit second in the league, are through to the last 16 of the Champions League and, in the wake of City’s FA Cup exit to Wigan last night, are favourites to win the FA Cup.

Recently, however, there has been plenty of talk about problems at Old Trafford.
Paul Pogba’s form has supposedly led to the France international to weigh up the possibility of a move to Real Madrid.

Alexis Sanchez is taking time to find his feet following his arrival from Arsenal.

And Mourinho’s tendency to criticise has also reportedly angered Anthony Martial, who reacted poorly to toiling against Tottenham.

But the Manchester Evening News say Mourinho and Woodward are on the same page.

Woodward has developed a ruthless streak having sacked David Moyes and Van Gaal during his five year reign.
Yet his relationship with Mourinho is smooth with the pair discussing everything United on a daily basis.

It is that personal touch which may have proved key in Mourinho signing a new contract last month.

The MEN say Woodward is also held in high regard by agents in the game – something that may have led to the blockbuster arrivals of Pogba, Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku in recent years.

They quote Michael Bolingbroke, who worked closely alongside Woodward for seven years with the Red Devils.

“He’s very measured, very considered, very cogitate in decision making,” he said.
“When he makes the decision, he’s very confident it’s the right decision and that gives him strength to see it through.

“He now has a reputation with agents for being very transparent and very clear. I think we know some agents will try and push the envelope to see how good he is.

“But he surrounds himself with experts and makes sure he is advised by the right people.

“He’s a very, very confident business man and highly intelligent. He can sense what is right and what is wrong.

“From what I hear and what I have seen at that level, Ed is highly respected.”
