Nursing mother arrested with large parcels of 'wee'

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on Sunday arrested a 34-year-old nursing mother at Dabala Customs checkpoint in the Volta Region for allegedly possessing 44 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis.

The items, concealed in two ladies bags and weighed 34.83kg was discovered by Customs officials when a check was done on the vehicle on which the suspect was travelling.

The suspect, identified only as Bertha by the Customs officials, has been handed over to the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) office at Afloa for further interrogation and processing.

Confirming the incident to Graphic Online in an interview, the in-charge of the Aflao sector of the Customs, Assistant Commissioner, Mr Frank Cudjoe Ashong said the suspect was arrested at about 2:20pm on Sunday, December 21, 2018.

He said the suspect was travelling from Akatsi to Accra in a commercial Hyundai H200 mini bus with registration number GS 4710-13.

He explained that when the said vehicle got to the Dabala Customs checkpoint, the vehicle was stopped and a search was conducted on it.

That, Mr Ashong added, when the search was done, two ladies bags containing the compressed substance were discovered in the vehicle.

He said when the owner of the bags was for, the suspect, Bertha, willingly owned up.

He said the suspected at the preliminary interrogation admitted that it was not her first time travelling with such materials to Accra.

Mr Ashong said the suspect has been handed over to the Aflao police station where she is being interrogated by Mr Samuel Yeboah, the head of NACOB in the area for further processing.

He has, therefore, cautioned individuals and group of persons who trade in such contraband drugs to desist from using the Afloa border, adding that Customs officers there “are on alert” and would not countenance such persons.

He said any person found with such illicit substances would be arrested and handed over to the appropriate quarters to face the full rigors of the law.
