E/R: JHS Shut Down After Machete Attack On A Teacher

The Akyem Maase Methodist Junior High School in the East Akyem Municipality of the Eastern region has been shut down indefinitely following a machete attack on one of the teachers on Tuesday.

The teacher, Patrick Brako, was attacked in the staff common room by his assailant identified as Kwasi John who inflicted the cutlass wound on the forehead of the teacher.

The situation would have been deadly if not for the swift intervention of colleague teachers.

The cause of the attack has not been established but sources say it may be linked to a disagreement over electricity bill in the teacher’s house.

The victim has lodged a complaint at the Police station after which a medical form was issued and subsequently treated.
A teacher in the School in an interview with Starr News said some residents in the community are notorious for attacks on teachers.

He said, just this year, a man stormed Maase Presbyterian School, to whip a female teacher with canes to revenge the teacher beating his child.
He said the case was reported to the Police but the accused was just fined.

He added that teachers feel unsafe to be in school following Tuesday’s incident hence the decision to close the school.

“As I speak with you now, all the teachers are with me here (Police Station), some are going to provide evidence to the Police, so we cannot keep the pupils in the school.

“I know that a similar incident has also happened in this same community, in the second term in one of the sister schools that is, Maase Presby Basic school, a similar incident happened where a man attacked one of the female teachers with a cane to whip the teacher so we brought the case to the police station, the man was taken to court and was fined.”

Meanwhile, the Circuit Supervisor, Mr. Akoto has visited the School to commensurate with the teachers to ensure that justice is served.
