EC Brouhaha: Chief Justice, AG Sued

A Ghanaian citizen, Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo, has sued the Chief Justice and the Attorney General over the widely published petition to the President seeking to remove the Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei from office over allegations of corruption and stated misconduct.
Mr Akolgo asserts that there is no need for the Chief Justice to constitute a committee to investigate the matter if a Prima Facie case is established, rather, the Supreme Court should handle that.
“Firstly, the grounds on which the petitioners wanted the removal of the EC Chair, Charlotte Osei are inconsistent with the constitution and therefore the petition should be declared unconstitutional, null and void, secondly, the petition can be dealt with by law enforcement agencies hence the referral to the Chief Justice is practically unnecessary.

“Lastly, a full bench of the Supreme court is better placed to sit on the petition and not the five-member committee expected by the Chief Justice if a prima facie case is established,” part of the petition read.
Some aggrieved workers of the Electoral commission petitioned President Akufo-Addo demanding the removal of their boss.
According to the staff, Mrs. Osei lacks the managerial skills needed to lead the commission.
The petition claimed the EC chair “single-handedly renegotiated the contract with the vendor without the involvement of the members of the Commission, not even the deputies. She then awarded the contract to the tune of $21,999,592 without going through tender contrary to the Public Procurement Act. The Chairperson then re-awarded these contracts without approval from the Commission”.
