Our leaders have no interest in our healthcare systems – Badu Akosa

Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a former Director–General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has faulted the leadership of the country for neglecting its healthcare system.

He argued that from time immemorial, the leadership of the country has always utilized medical services outside Ghana, and as such they are not concerned about the state of healthcare in the country.

He then went ahead to propose that until, the situation is remedied, all government appointees should be directed to make use of the countries health facilities. Professor Akosa stated that successive governments have been paying lip service to the situation, adding that it is usually for political scores, and nothing else.

He stated that corruption and lack of commitment by the leadership are the prime reasons for the current state of affairs.

This, he claimed, results in the distrust for the quality of services offered, and hence they are reluctant to submit themselves to the healthcare systems available.

He accused successive ministers of Health of engaging in corrupt practices, rather than taking corrective measures to remedy the situation.

Professor Akosa then turned his attention to the story of the Central Medical Stores that was razed down by fire. He admitted that he was unable to adequately control the operations of the stores.

He revealed that the fire was intentionally set by persons who wished to hide their nefarious activities. He also stated that, because of the fear of exposure, they resorted to burning up the place, rather than being caught.
