Appeatu is too political to be IGP - Sidi Abubakar

The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sidi Abubakar has launched a scathing on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu. The youth leader of the largest opposition party says, within the police administration, the IGP has succeeded in politicizing the police service.

When asked if there was any evidence to support the claims, he said, some insiders are unhappy with the current state of the police service under the current IGP. Per his view, there are better people who can do the job better than Mr. Apeatu.

The IGP he said is too political for the job as head of the law enforcement agency. ‘’He is highly a politician to be an IGP.

He is being politically manipulated.’’ He made reference to the recent mob atatcks, vigilantism and lawlessness in the country stressing that, the current IGP has failed to maintain law and order in the country. ‘’He has done nothing about the vigilantism we talked about. Sometimes you wonder why he has failed to do something about our concerns and sometimes you could see that he has refused to take certain actions because he is doing the bidding of his boss, President Akufo-Addo.’’

Sidi Abubakar in an interview with Rainbow Radio said, if there is anything the NPP got it wrong, then it will be the appointment of the IGP and the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul.

Commenting on the call on the police to deal with lawlessness individuals including that of the ruling government, he said, the incompetence of the IGP is manifesting and finds it strange that he [IGP] should wait for directives from the president before dealing with lawlessness.

President Akufo-Addo after swearing in the new CJ at the Flagstaff House assured Ghanaians that he will not shield any member of his party and charged the police to deal with lawless people without fear or favour.

‘’To persons perpetrating acts of lawlessness in the name of being members of the ruling party, let me make it clear to you that you will find no shield in my government from the law.’’ ‘’I urge the police to do everything in their power to bring to book all those who fall foul of the law. We cannot have development which will bring jobs to our youth without order,’’ the president said.

But Sidi Abubakar says the IGP has failed and is only looking for political favours from the NPP,and should wait till a directive comes from the president before working.

‘’Why will the president be calling on people to crack the whip on lawlessness? The IGP himself should know that this is his duty. Was he appointed to be sitting down and wait for directives from the president? Certainly no.

That is why I am telling you that, the man is not apt for the job. I think he is somebody who wants to handle things from the political angle.

He is politically bias and the only thing I can commend him for is the free haircut for the police service and nothing else.’’ ‘’There are better men who can do the job…We have seen what his predecessors did but he is not apt for the job. He should sit up. The best for him to do if he’s unable to do the job, is to step aside and allow a new person to take over.’’
