Never before had the number for the first half of a campaign reached the seven-million mark, which is an 8.71 per cent increase from last season – with 602,372 more fans attending matches in the two divisions.

The figure of 5,172,228 supporters in La Liga Santander shows a 2.35 per cent increase in the same period in 2017/18 season, with 118,942 more visitors watching topflight matches.

Segunda Division, meanwhile, has racked up record-breaking numbers for this point of the season in comparison with previous years. In 2016/17 season, for example, it took 11 more match days to reach 2,347,997 stadium spectators, and in 2017/18 season, the figure at the halfway point was 1,864,567.

This total is a 25.93 per cent increase from the 2017/18 campaign between August and January in the second tier. Average attendance is also on the increase at stadiums in La Liga Santander (27,222) and Segunda Division (10,164).

As an entertainment industry, La Liga continues to grow and supporters’ interest in taking part in the spectacle of Spanish football is demonstrated by the positive trend in the number of fans attending matches every season.
