Convict escapes from police custody

An 18-year-old ex-convict identified as Akwasi Sarfo has escaped from police custody in Assin Nyankomase in the Assin Fosu District.

According to the Police, on November 21, 2018, the officer on duty, PW/Constable Janet Essilfie, reported for duty at about 2 pm and was to be relieved at about 10 pm.

During the duty schedule, she allegedly left the keys to the male cells on the charge office counter which is close to the cells and stepped out to sit in front of the charge office.

While she was still outside around 6:40 pm, convicted inmate who was to serve a two-year term in a Borstal institution, managed to join pieces of plywood used to panel the inner part of the cell to lift the keys on the counter to his reach.

To the blind side of the policewoman, he allegedly opened the cell which was secured with two padlocks and steadily escaped without the notice of the policewoman who remained seated at the front view of the charge office.

The police are however on a manhunt for the escapee with the case under investigation.
