Man Utd transfer news: Paul Scholes slams former club amid Liverpool and Man City spending

MANCHESTER UNITED don’t have a chance in competing with Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title due to their summer spending.
That’s the claim of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Jose Mourinho’s side have acquired three new players during the transfer window – Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant – while their rivals have splashed the cash.

Liverpool have spent over £170m on four signings while Manchester City broke their transfer record with the £60m signing of Riyad Mahrez from Leicester.

And Scholes feels United don’t have enough quality in their squad to compete with their two main rivals.
He also claims the Red Devils are in disarray in regards to tactics and Mourinho knowing his best team – the complete opposite to Pep Guardiola’s champions.

“When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don’t think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute,” Scholes said.

“Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season.

“I just don’t see United getting closer to City. City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what’s going on.
“You don’t really know the team, you don’t really know the players, you don’t know how they’re going to perform from one week to the next.

“So I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them challenging for the league this year.”

United are hoping to get two last minute deals done before today’s 5pm deadline and Mourinho previously warned executive vice-chairman they’d be facing a ‘difficult’ season if they didn’t bolster the squad.

“My CEO knows what I want and I still have a few days to wait and see what happens,” the Portuguese boss said last week.
“The other clubs who compete with us are really strong and already have fantastic teams.

“Or they are investing massively like Liverpool, who are buying everything and everybody.

“If we don’t make our team better, it will be a difficult season for us.”

United kick off their Premier League campaign against Leicester tomorrow night (8pm).
