50 % of ‘bitters’ contain less alcohol than labels indicate

Have you ever found yourself easily tipsy or hardly in the mood after taking locally- brewed alcoholic beverages, known as bitters?

You may be feeling right, depending not only on the quantity one drinks but the brand as well.

A student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has found most of them on the market, contain less alcohol than their labels show.



Kwasi Boateng is a final-year Chemistry student of KNUST undertook the analysis of 20 brands of ‘bitters’ on the market and found, more than half of them have alcoholic content below what the brewers advertise.
Fifteen per cent of the products were also found to have higher levels of alcohol than they portray.

One brand matched both in actual content and label.

Mr. Boateng’s thesis, supervised by Professor Ray Voegborlo sought to establish alcohol content in bitters.
