118 pupils escape death as classroom caves in

About 118 Kindergarten Pupils of the Osae Gyan Primary School, a Public School in the Nsawam District of the Eastern Region, have escaped death following the collapse of their classroom block.

The incident occurred when parts of the wall erected around the school collapsed during a rainfall which flooded parts of the Nsawam township.The collapsed wall affected the KG block causing it to also cave in. The incident occurred 30 minutes after the pupils had left.

The incident has displaced the affected pupils. Authorities of the school are struggling to find a place to accommodate the displaced pupils.




Confirming the incident to Starr News, the Nsawam Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization, Lucy Adu, explained that “the children left the place 30 minutes before the incident. 118 pupils are affected”

She said NADMO has done an impact assessment of the situation and a report has been filed to the Municipal Assembly and the Regional Secretariat of NADMO for assistance.

Meanwhile, the disaster organization has recommended that the entire KG block is pulled down to avert any further disaster.

The Assembly Member for Gyankrom Electoral Area, Gyamfi Osarfo has called on the government to fix the perennial flooding of the area.
