Man Utd News: Pogba beats Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan to win Europa League award

MANCHESTER UNITED star Paul Pogba has fended off competition from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to win the Europa League player of the season award.
Manchester United won the Europa League last year with Pogba playing a starring role.

The France international was criticised by many for his inconsistent displays after arriving from Juventus for a then world-record fee of £89million.

But his best performanes came on the European stage, with Paul Pogba scoring in the 2-0 final win over Ajax back in May.

And the 23-year-old has now been voted as the competition’s standout performer from last term.

“Thank you I am very honoured to be the first one to win this award,” he said.
“Hopefully this season will be as good as last season.”

Pogba beat two of his Manchester United team-mates to the prize.

Mkhitaryan was also nominated after scoring six times throughout the competition, including crucial strikes against Ajax, Anderlecht and FC Rostov.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, struck five goals but missed out on an appearance in the final due to injury.
United’s cup triumph means they will be back in the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils last won the trophy back in 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

Jose Mourinho’s men, however, have been drawn in a favourable group.

United will go up against Benfica, FC Basel and CSKA Moscow.
