BREAKING: Barcelona terror attack driver shot dead with ‘explosive belt’ strapped to him

THE main suspect in the Barcelona terror attack has been shot dead by police after being spotted with an explosive belt strapped to him, Spanish authorities have confirmed.
Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, is believed to be the driver who ploughed a rented white van down the popular tourist promenade of Las Ramblas in central Barcelona on Thursday afternoon.

A total of 13 people were killed while more than 120 were injured.

Another man was found dead in his car, stabbed to death, after the terrorist is believed to have hi-jacked the car after the van’s airbag set-off, disabling the vehicle’s electrics.

A woman in the coastal town of Cambrils, south of Barcelona, was also killed by five men police believe were part of the same group as the Barcelona attack, bringing the total death toll to 15.
Catalan’s police force, Mossos, confirmed officers shot Abouyaaqoub dead after a member of the public spotted him in a petrol station in Subirats, a small town west of Barcelona.

He ran into some vineyards after the man called after him before police surrounded him.

A police helicopter was also seen flying around the area.

After shooting the Moroccan immigrant dead they deployed the Tedax bomb squad’s robot as he was wearing an explosive belt.
The robot removed the belt from the body which was laying face down on the mountain road, and confirmed the explosives were fake, during an hour long operation.

Police requested members of the public did not give away their position during the operation.

The terrorists in Cambrils were shot dead by police after they were seen wearing explosive belts which were later found to be fake.

A spokesman from Mossos, the Catalan Police force, said: “We cannot at this stage confirm that the man who has been shot is Younes Abouyaaquoub.

“What we can confirm is that the suspicious person was wearing what appeared to be an explosives belt.

“I cannot say at this stage whether he has been killed or not.”
The police force also posted confirmation on Twitter the man in Subirats had been shot – and appeared to be wearing an explosives belt.

The Catalan Government tweeted: “17.05h Suspect in Subirats was weargin what appeared to be an explosive belt.

“The individual has been shot down by the Catalan police.”
