CHELSEA’s newest signing Alvaro Morata IS an upgrade on Diego Costa, according to pundit Stewart Robson.
Robson also believes Morata is a better player than former Chelsea target and current Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Spaniard joined the Blues from Real Madrid last Friday for a fee in the region of £70million.
Morata is set to replace Costa as Chelsea’s main centre-forward heading into the new season after Costa was told by manager Antonio Conte he is not in his future plans.
Conte looked at Lukaku before signing Morata but Robson believes he has come out of the deal better than his rival Jose Mourinho.
“I think Morata is an excellent player,” the former Arsenal midfielder said on Sky Sports.
“I think Diego Costa in his first season at Chelsea played very well and he played very well for the first half of last year.
“But after he wanted to go to China and after Christmas, I thought he was really poor until the last couple of games of the season.
“He didn’t try a leg, I don’t think Conte was particularly happy with him.
“I think Morata will be an upgrade. Morata is a different player to Lukaku but I would go Morata for the all-round player.”
Morata scored 20 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, helping them to La Liga and Champions League glory.
