Gitmo 2 have behaved well – Gov’t

The Government of Ghana has said that the two Guantanamo ex- detainees have comported themselves well since their arrival in the country last year.
In a press statement, the Minister of Information, Hon. Mustapha Hamid stressed that the ex- detainees will continue to be under the supervision of the security agencies.
“Government wants to assure the nation that the ex-detainees, who have been comporting themselves well since their arrival in Ghana continue to be under the supervision of security agencies.”

The statement comes after the Supreme Court on Thursday described the stay of the two ex-detainees in Ghana as illegal and ordered their stay in the country to be subjected to parliamentary approval in the next three months.
In a judgment, the Supreme Court, presided over by Ghana’s new Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, held that the agreement between the Government of Ghana and the United States of America for the resettlement of the two ex-detainees from Guantanamo bay required parliamentary approval in accordance with article 75(2) of the constitution and a failure to secure same makes the hosting of the ex-detainees in Ghana unconstitutional.
Hon. Hamid added that government is going to take prompt steps to address the consequential orders of the Supreme Court.
He, however, called for calm among the populace on the matter.
