NSMQ17: Presec mounts comeback after early Accra Aca heart attack

Presbeterian Boys has grabbed the last slot for the quarter finals at the National Science and Maths Quiz ahead of Accra Academy and St. Johns.

They won with 45 points, St. Johns upset the carts with 31 points leaving Accra Academy with 26 points in the final contest at the one-eighth stage of competition.

Presbyterian Boys used the first round to justify their tag as favourites by taking a two-point lead over Accra rivals Accra Academy. They grabbed 17 points while Accra Academy would have been happy with a close 15 points with St Johns Grammar settling for 12.

But the tale changed after Accra Academy ripped through the second round leading with 21 points. Presec sunk to the bottom of this Accra derby with 15 points as St Johns did themselves proud with 16 points.

Tension fllled the University of Ghana auditorium from then on as fears of an upset forced Presec Boys into prayers. The favourite sweated it out again in the third round as they lost again to Accra Academy albeit closing the lead.

Rivals to Presec circled around on social media ready for trolling festival at the prospect of an early knock-out to Presec.

Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer had tweeted his support for Alma Mater, Accra Academy, as signs of a possible national jubilation shaped up for Accra Aca.




But the Fourth round – a round of True or False – proved to be the minnows undoing as the Accra lead collapsed.

Presec restored their first round lead with 35 points to heave a huge Alma Mater sigh of relief. Accra Academy crawled behind with 26 points while St. Johns made do with 28.

In the final round of riddles, Presec finished off Accra Aca to prevent an upset, keeping a bragging right that took too much effort to defend for that early stage of the competition.

Accra Academy after a pulsating contest lost not only to Presec but to St.Johns, surrounding a bragging right to them for the next 12 months.
